Every year, the Street Academy estimates 50,00 children live on the street of Accra. These are Accra’s most vulnerable population. Left on their own, the children suffer from maluntrition, lack of education, crime and exploitation. The Street Academy was established on 6th November 1986 by Ataa Lartey ( A local Chief), a sports enthusiast and social worker.
The Street Academy is located in the Arts Centre Annex, a large but dying community in the heart of the city. The Art Centre has a population of 3,00 people, with about 60% of the population being uneducated and do not value education. Presently with the support of Naidvar Trust, The Street Academy now has a one substantial school building.
The Street Academy works with local teams to scout for children on the street. The teamwork with local communities to gain information about the child’s background then places the child with a safe local family. The Street Academy is open Monday to Friday from 09.00-15.00. Children are given two meals a day.90% of the children do not eat before coming to school, and a significant proportion examined during the need’s assessment were suffering from malnourishment and anemia.
Springside School Kitale Kenya, is private run school that gets no government funding. There are 358 children, 42 are orphans, all from the local village. The founder Senior Pastor Eluid Wekesa developed the school because children from the village were too poor to travel the distance to Kitale to the public schools. There are 14 teachers. There is no playground for the kids to play, and the area is far too small for the volume of children in the school. None of the children have ever had toys. The condition of the books was extremely poor and out of date. The children are fed one meal a day which consists mainly of maize and beans, the local crops. For the orphans that live there it is often the only meal they get.
The Naidvar Trust Music Academy is a concept established by Augustine Akugre (Slow) Naidvar Trust Music Director, a local Ghanaian musician. The idea was designed to bring music and dance to the poorest parts of Ghana to enable street kids and children in extreme poverty to have an opportunity to learn new skills. All children attending the Naidvar Music Academy will be have regular music and dance lessons, as well as health checks, an opportunity to shower, obtain new clothes and eat nutritious food.
The first Music and Video has been written, produced by ‘Slow’ to say no to child abuse. This video was written in response to Naidvar doctors examining street kids and seeing the high level of phyical abuse to street kids. Caning is a normal punishment for children in schools without any awareness that this is abuse.
Volunteering with the Naidvar Trust is an important and personal social change action for a better world. Our charitable activities are centered in Accra and Bolgatanga, Ghana and Kitale, Kenya, but your volunteering can happen in your community, on your block, in your social group, and in your home. Using your computer or smartphones to be a ‘virtual volunteer’ helps to promote the sustainable activities in each of these settings by “liking” and “sharing” Naidvar Trust postings, using the donation portals to give a one-time or sustainable donation from your local fund raising activities, such as bake sales, car washes, birthday crowdfunding, and free will offerings from church and other social gatherings. Additionally, students requiring community volunteer activities for secondary school and collage application requirements can participate with Naidvar Trust in social change activities that can be customized to the student’s particular interests. Your experiences in grant writing, corporate social responsibility programs, employee-community relations committees and other “giving forums’ have a home with the Naidvar Trust. If you are interested in ‘virtually’ volunteering with the Naidvar Trust, please send your contact details and a member of the Naidvar Board will be in touch with you to further explore.
Your money can make a huge difference.
